'Chennai has changed a lot. It is not the same what it was a few decades ago,' says Venkatesh Mannar, the Chennai-born scientist who has been awarded Canada’s highest civilian award-- the Order of Canada.
.
The honour to Mannar was under 'Social Service' category and, 'for his leadership in the global fight against malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency.'

Known world-wide for his leadership in effective nutrition and development initiatives spanning over 35 years, Mannar, in an interview with News Today, says he loves idly and dosa, among other south Indian dishes.

Having moved to Canada in 1990, are you still in touch with India, especially Tamilnadu?

Very much in fact. Micronutrient Initiative (Mannar is the president of this organisation) is working close with State governments in India to eliminate vitamin and mineral deficiencies in children. We have assisted Tamilnadu Salt Corporation by providing technology, machineries and required ingredients for the manufacture of Double Fortified Salt in order to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders and iron deficiency anemia among the vulnerable children.

As a nutrition expert, what's your take on the nutritious noon meal scheme(Saththunavu) being implemented in Tamilnadu schools?

It's a landmark initiative which was first launched in Tamilnadu. Other States in the country started implementing similar schemes only later. Children have to be given healthy food right from a very young age. It will go a long way in shaping up their sound health. Understanding this fully well, the Tamilnadu government is running the scheme in an effective way.

From a parent's point of view, how should children be fed?

Parents should ensure that their wards don't take fast food very much. Pulses and green food with vitamin content is strongly recommended. Oily stuff needs to be avoided.

What's Chennai to you and how often do you visit here?

For professional and personal reasons, I come to India very often. And obviously to Chennai too. T Nagar was my home when I was here and I love to be in Chennai. The city has developed a lot in terms of population and facilities. But the ever growing traffic should be taken care of. When I am in Chennai, I am happy to treat my tastebuds with idly, dosa and other South Indian delicacies
