adiyen dasan.There are various keyboards to type Tamil which almost everybody here knows. Google, NHM Writer, Azhagi etc are already known and very widely used. Today I came across another keyboard VUTAM 3. Eventhough it was introduced as early as in 2009, so far I have not seen that. After using this one, I am very happy to introduce this keyboard to those who do not know about this and fo those who still find it difficult to remember key strokes and type in Tamil. Those who know the fingering in English typing keyboard will become masters in Tamil typing instantly. It supports only unicode . One need to remember just three steps. For example,in Normal position r=ர; in Shift the same r=ரு; With Alt key the same r=ரூPlease visit http://v.ramasami.tripod.com to know more about it and to download the keyboard . In Tamil the terms தளம். மாடி, மேல்மாடி mentioned there are Normal, Shift and Alt positions in the keyboard. Just by hitting Ctrl+Spacebar English and Tamil can be toggled. Interested may give it a try.I am very glad to share this for two reasons.One the person behind this belongs to Aruppukkottai our nearby town in Tamilnadu and the second important reason is he was also a retiree from our telecom department

bank could now charge for withdrawing cash and depositing cheques?

Your bank could now charge for withdrawing cash and depositing cheques    (04-Feb-2013 )

With many of us engaged in an economic activity to earn a livelihood, we have bank accounts; and deposits and withdrawals are the core activities which we perform. Today with technological innovation we have various avenues (such as ATMs, internet banking, mobile banking, phone banking) through which we can carry out our banking activity, but yet there are certain banking transactions such as cash deposits, cash withdrawals and cheque deposits, which we yet prefer doing physically by visiting our bank. But now it seems that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) wants to preclude bank account holders to do such physical banking transactions.

Recently, the RBI floated a discussion paper on 'Disincentivising Issuance and Usage of Cheques' thereby seeking to discourage usage of cheques and cash withdrawal, by levying a charge on such transactions. “In order to avoid increased dependence or slippage to cash-based transactions, high (both in amount and frequency) cash withdrawals and deposits of cash by individuals may also be charged,” said the discussion paper.

The other major suggestions enunciated in the discussion paper include:
  • Restriction on the number of cheque books (by keeping a minimum number on a per annum basis, and thereafter levying a charge – which could be moderate to steep, beyond the minimum number)
  • Ban on post-dated cheques (PDCs) for fresh loans, with suitable conditions for late payments and non-payments which should be disclosed upfront
  • Existing PDCs should be converted into electronic payment mandates
  • For cheques issues beyond stipulated limit, charges may be levied at the time of payment/debit to the account by the paying bank when the cheque is presented for payment through clearing
  • Discourage cheque collection boxes at public places
  • Mandatory on-line payment of credit card bills
It is noteworthy that in order to encourage greater adoption of electronic mode of payment, the RBI has also mentioned that the Government departments and agencies should immediately stop levying “convenience charge” on customers who prefer to make payments using electronic means such as cards and online banking.

According to RBI, corporates and institutional customers are the largest users of cheques across all value bands (accounting for 54% - 64% of the cheques processed), and thus for them access to cheque books should be made costlier, no free cheques books should be issued to them and steep charge should be levied by all banks on cash deposits/withdrawals by current account holders into/from their accounts. It is also said that for payment of dividend through cheques, an additional charge should be levied.

We are of the view that, the aforesaid discussion paper, on which the RBI has invited comments from public by February 28, seeks to establish a "less-cash" society and encourage greater adoption of electronic mode(s) of payment. But we think that, it is vital for the central bank to recognize that there may be several small businesses (in nature of proprietorship and partnership concerns) or even older individuals who may be affected as they may not be very technologically savvy to perform their banking transaction via the electronic mode of payment or even pay their utility bills online. Such a proposal if goes through may also impede in the Government’s agenda of financial inclusion, since many aren’t very well-versed with electronic mode(s) of payment.

     Although all transanction through on-line is welcome, as indicated in nyour ino, there are many persons who do not have access to computer, especially older generation. Hence there should be excemption to Senior and Super Senior Citizens from the new cash withdrawal and deposit charges.

    The Glass of Milk - lovely story

    Thanks to Sri M G Anantharaman who forwarded this:

    Subject: The Glass of Milk - lovely story
    ==================================

    One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

    He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

    Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! . She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?"

    You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

    He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

    As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

    Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

    Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

    Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

    Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

    He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

    After a long struggle, the battle was won.

    Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...

    "Paid in full with one glass of milk"

    (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

    Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You,
    God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands."

    There's a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the water comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place - And, after all, isn't that what life is all about?

    Aadhaar is a number not an ID card, says Montek Singh Ahluwalia

    India, Posted on Feb 03, 2013 at 04:27am IST

    Indo-US Business Event
    Hosted by Fairfax County, Virginia & Brickwork India. 11 Feb 2013. www.fairfaxcountyeda.org

    New Delhi: Seeking to set at rest controversy over Aadhaar, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Saturday said UID is a number and not an identity card. "The Aadhaar is actually a number, linked to that number is a biometric record which is centrally stored. The (Aadhaar) number comes in a form of card. But that card is not an identity card," Ahluwalia said when asked about the raging controversy over the issue.
    Some Cabinet Ministers have reportedly raised the issue pertaining to Aadhaar that whether it is a number or an identity card. The government has recently constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the issue. Elaborating his point of view, Ahluwalia said, "I can tear up the card. As long as I have the number, I don't need the card. There is no such thing as UIDAI (Aadhaar) card.
    You need it only because you want to remember your number. If you stick your number in the wallet. That is fine." As regards the GoM, he said, "There are concerns that if you issue a card which is mandatory, it will become basis for harassment so the GoM has been constituted to go into that issue only in relation to the (NMIC) card."
    There is a separate proposal which is national multipurpose identity card (NMIC) which is being run by the Ministry of Home Affairs, he said adding that when the law was amended by the NDA government, this card (NMIC) was made mandatory.
    The government has mandated that Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to enrol and collect biometrics details of 60 crore population of the country. The biometric details of rest of the 61 crore population would be collected under National Population Register project.

    Family, LIC official arrested for cheating insurance firm

    Bangalore, Feb 2, 2013, DHNS :
    The City police have arrested an elderly couple, their daughter and a LIC official for allegedly duping the insurance company with false claims worth Rs 1.4 crore. While investigating the case, the police claimed to have unearthed another 14 fake claims that could have cost the insurance firm Rs 2.5 crore.

    It was learnt that Trilok Kantilal Parikh (60) had used fake documents to buy insurance policies. He ran out of luck after a friend, Jagadeesh Chowdary, visited the LIC office at Malleswaram. “Jagadeesh Chowdary had gone to the Malleshwaram LIC office to meet a senior official, Kushal Kumar Katharia (50). He got the shock of his life when he saw his death certificate on the official’s table. Jagadeesh did not confront Katharia then.

    Instead, he alerted senior officials of the LIC, who thereafter verified all policies that Katharia had recently claimed citing death of the insurer. This opened a can of worms. The LIC came up with seven fake policies that were recently encashed. They lodged a complaint with the Malleshwaram police,” said S N Siddramappa, DCP (North).

    Katharia was subsequently taken into custody. Based on his disclosure, the police arrested Parikh, his wife Vandana T Parikh (58) and their daughter Jasmin T Parikh (35).
    The trio had fudged records under various aliases to buy Jeevan Mitra LIC policies through Katharia.

    They waited for five years before producing another set of fudged records which showed that the insurer was dead and claimed the insurance amount. Parikh used to create fake ration cards and driving licences with the help of one Syed Yousuf.

    Investigations revealed that Trilok Parikh purchased a policy under the alias of Ayyappa, using his own photograph. After five years, he produced a fake death certificate and claimed Rs 14 lakh.

    He also bought two policies in his daughter Jasmin’s name, with wife as the nominee. After some years, he produced the death certificate of his daughter and claimed Rs 6 lakh. Parikh bought few other policies under various names using his daughter’s picture and made Rs 42 lakh.

    Parikh also bought policies in his son Deevesh’s name. He produced Deevesh’s death certificate and claimed Rs 6.5 lakh. He went to the extent of buying policies in his friends’ name without their knowledge. In the case of Chowdary, Parikh had used his driving licence to buy the policy.

    Parikh has been involved in several illegal activities in the City since 1987. Several burglary, assault and robbery cases have been registered against him in the City Market, Chickpet, Ulsoor Gate, Peenya, Yeshwanthpur and Hebbagodi police stations.

    City Police Commissioner B G Jyothi Prakash Mirji said in 1994, Parikh was arrested under TADA by the Pahar Gunj police in New Delhi. He was later released in 1999. Parikh and his family had returned to the City in 2000. They were staying at Rajajinagar I, N block
